Best Tech for PMPs is a topic on many Project Management Professionals mind and this is an opportunity to collaborate our thoughts on the subject.
Many of my friends see me use different electronic gadgets and wonder why and how I use them to ease my work life. I thought this might be interesting for our readers to learn more about Best Tech for PMPs like myself.
On a daily basis for my work management, I use a Dual Sim Samsung Note 3 Neo as my mobile phone, and although Note 4 and Note 5 are out in the market, I just purchased another brand new Note 3 again. So, my friends wondered why I haven’t upgraded my phone to Note 5. In addition, I use a Samsung Note Pro 12.1 tablet that syncs nicely with my Note 3 and both are considered to be of same family in regards to their design and operating system. Recently, I added another gadget, a smart watch, Samsung Gear 2, not the Gear 2 Neo or the newly released Gear S, and I searched very much to find a brand new one and paid $100 more to get this watch and not the new released ones. Finally, I use a stereo Jabra Headset that work nicely on all three devices at the same time.
So, why do I use a generation back devices when new ones are available.
First of all, you have to realize that you can’t have all the good in the world at the same time. So you have to make compromises on your selections to come up with the best decision. There is no doubt that Note Pro 12.1 Tablet is the best in the market. It has the largest screen, a stylus Pen for note taking and highest Ram and processor of any other Tablet device on the Market. Therefore, I no longer carry a separate notebook to go to different meetings, it has all my documents and media in one place, and I no longer use my laptop or desktop, as much.
On the other hand, many question my selection for Mobile Phone, specially since I searched the market to buy my second brand new Note 3, in addition to the one I have been using for the past year. Note 3 Neo has all what I need and it doesn’t have the restriction of new Note 5. I agree that the camera and screen resolution are lower and the processor and ram is much less, however, Note 3 is sufficient for my needs. I use my 16.1 Megapixel Samsung camera to take family and memorable moment photos, so I don’t need a mobile phone with high resolution, however, I use my phone camera as a scanner for documents and collecting site information, and the 8 megapixel camera is sufficient. The Note 5 doesn’t have an external memory capability, therefore, I can’t use my phone as a device to transfer pictures or as a backup memory when needed on my camera. Note 5 has a higher version of Android and would not match the apps I use on my Note Pro Tablet.
Finally, the Gear 2 smartwatch has everyone puzzled, since it is an older generation, more expensive, and I had hard time finding a new one to buy. As I said all my gadgets are considered to be of the same family design and system wise. However, the Gear 2 has a 2 megapixel camera that other smartwatches are no longer equipped with. I don’t use it as a spy device as most people assume, since it has a loud shoot effect that notifies everyone of being photoed, but it is easier to take pictures with it in spur of moment situations when it is hard to reach your phone and go to your camera application and point a shoot. It is on your wrist and S-voice activated to shoot as you command!
I have many more reasons that are not listed here, but I will add more if I see more interested from Project Managers to learn more about Best Tech for PMPs and the capabilities of these devices and how I use them to ease my life.
